- Our Achievements
20 Years of Excellence in NTD Research
For 20 years, the Centre for Schistosomiasis and Parasitology has been committed to ensuring that it continuously attains its mission of research capacity building around schistosomiasis and parasitology. Staff at the centre have been committed to forging close links with other partners in the international Neglected Tropical Diseases community.
Main Results & Achievements

Epidemiological Research
Updated distribution maps for Cameroon reveal high polyparasitism, with over 50% of children harboring multiple helminth species. The study identifies synergistic interactions between concurrent infections and confirms a genetic predisposition to heavy parasitic loads. Furthermore, documented epidemiological shifts highlight the dynamic nature of transmission levels across the region.

Scientific Discoveries
Studies on praziquantel confirm its high efficacy against S. haematobium and mixed schistosome infections, though results vary by dose and infection intensity. A 2018 impact survey across six regions in Cameroon, alongside Mass Drug Administration campaigns, underscores the importance of continuous drug monitoring to maintain control over schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths.

Treatment & Monitoring
Research highlights a high frequency of mixed Schistosoma infections and significant ectopic egg elimination, complicating diagnosis and morbidity. It documents the decline of S. intercalatum alongside the description of a new species, S. guineensis. Additionally, genetic characterization of various strains provides deeper insight into parasite diversity and evolution in Cameroon.

Capacity Building & Training
Research productivity is marked by over 100 high-impact publications and extensive capacity building, including specialized training in malacology and diagnostics for African and Chinese experts. Collaboration with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine resulted in 6 Master's theses, further strengthening academic ties. Additionally, community health education and student training ensure the practical application of research findings on the ground.
